Science Class Week of 5/04/09

HOLA PEOPLE!!!! Welll okay soooo this week was about the enviroment and how things change to fit the wonderful world around us!!! Yay!! =)





Monday: We finished conclusions on our cockroach experiment. Notes:

Maybe they are color blind(yellow shades)





Rough surface prefrence? They couldclimb up wood, paper, fabrics, they have pads/spikey legs for climbing





They prefer dark areas





Actual surfaces (type) cockroaches have no preference





Hissing occurs when physically "manipolated" Could this be mimicry of snakes of other predators?





Smaller roaches run faster





Cockroaches seem to move 2x their weight





We thoght these were signs of camoflauge, a defense mechanism, a feeding mechanism, haitat, and mimicry. =)





Then we defined an adaptation:





ADAPTATION- the changes in physical appearance or behavior in the responce to the enviroment that developes over time.





Tuesday- Lesson!!! I had to tootlue on my clarinetue





Wednesday- We worked on an experiment about adaptions like how some creatures have to change to fit their backround. If the enviroment changed to quickly the creatures would all die.


=( We related this to how the dinos went exstint because of the meteor. They were not able to adapt so their species did not thrive. Poor dinos...=(





H.W. Write paragraphs on what enviro would best suit our reebop and another one about what enviro ot could not live in. (I would tell you guys what wrote but we didn't go over it so it is probally wrong. Sorry. =))





Thursday- Kept working on adaptaions project.





Friday- Went over project, talked, and IMed people. (IMing is FUN!!!! =))

Notes:

Natural selection

If the organisim is best suited to the enviroment they survive.(A trait must be deemed desirable=))

If the orgnism is not fit they will die off, not reproduce- negative (Less desired)
traits won't be passed down

A non desirable trait still might occur in population because of heterozygous, reccesitiviy, or mutations.

Changes occur gradually across a whole population

If the enviroment changes to quickly organisms won't be able to adapt, they will die out.
